industry background

Over the last decade, rock climbing has gone from extreme to mainstream. Every year, more and more people are trying this fun, adventurous sport. Climbing has gone from something done by only a select few to an activity enjoyed by hundreds of thousands across the country. Climbing walls are finding their way into public schools and universities, parks, above swimming pools, on floating docks on a lake, and even on cruise ships.

The climbing industry continues to mature, making the sport more accessible to the general population. Plus, with climbing one of the newest sports added to the summer Olympics, experts project that climbing will become even more popular with this exposure.

Even though the number of new gyms that opened in 2022 represent a decline compared to 2017, 2018 & 2021, 32 net new gyms opened annually in the U.S. on average over the past 10 years, which represents an all-time high, according to Climbing Business Journal.

The Outdoor Foundation published its 2022 Outdoor Participation Trends Report in September, and notably, ever since they began tracking participation for the categories Climbing (Indoor) and Climbing (Sport/Boulder) in 2017, the numbers for these two categories have steadily increased—even through the early days of the pandemic.

The estimated number of indoor climbers, for instance, rose to over 5.6 million in 2021, representing an all-time high and a roughly 7.1% increase from 2019.
