Think Climbing Isn’t for You? Think Again!

A common misconception is that climbing is only for the fearless or extremely fit. The truth? It’s flexible, customizable, and welcoming—whether you want a mental challenge, a family activity, or just something fun and different. Here are four myths about climbing, busted:

Myth #1: I’m Not Strong Enough

  • You don’t need to be super strong or perfectly fit. Like any new fitness endeavor, you can build strength as you go.

  • Focus on technique. It’s more important than raw strength, and anyone can learn it!

Myth #2: Climbing Is Too Extreme / Too Scary

  • Climbing is a choose-your-own-adventure sport. Want adrenaline? You can have that! Looking for something calm and thoughtful? You can find that too. You can even do both in the same climb!

  • Move at your own pace. You choose how much and how high, whether to push your limits or stay close to the ground and focus on flow.

  • In a climbing gym, you can try things out with soft landings and a controlled environment.

Myth #3: I’m Too Old / Too Young / Too Out of Shape

  • People of all ages thrive in climbing. From toddlers in our Tots on the Rocks program to adults discovering climbing for the first time, it’s never too early—or too late—to start.

  • You don’t have to be a gym rat to climb, either. If you’re already fit, awesome. If not, no worries! Find what feels good where you are and work your way up.

  • Climbing is also great for people who can’t do high-impact sports. Climbing is gentler on joints compared to running or court sports.

Myth #4: I’m Not a Traditional “Fitness Person”

  • Climbing is perfect for people who don’t enjoy traditional workouts.

  • Maybe you’re into niche fitness, or maybe treadmills just aren’t your thing.

  • Or you’re someone who likes puzzles and mental challenges. Climbing is ideal for you! After all, that’s why bouldering climbs are called problems. You’ll love learning how to come up with creative solutions and surprise yourself.

  • Climbing is part workout, part puzzle, part adventure—totally unlike your typical repetitive gym routine.

Hidden Benefits

  • What many people don’t expect are the hidden benefits. Climbing builds focus, confidence, and problem-solving skills. It’s also social—our community is encouraging, not intimidating. And because kids and parents can climb together, it’s an activity the whole family can share.

But What About…

  • Worried about equipment? Rental gear is available.

  • Nervous about being a beginner? Everyone starts somewhere, and our staff and community are welcoming.

  • Concerned you won’t fit in? Climbing attracts a wide variety of people!

  • What if I’m afraid of heights? No problem. You can stay close to the ground and climb only as high as feels comfortable.

What If Climbing Is for You?

If you’ve ever said, “Climbing isn’t for me,” maybe it’s time to test that assumption. Try a session, see what surprises you, and discover why so many people fall in love with climbing.
