Women’s Online Fitness Training for Strong, Confident Climbers

Guest Post by Julia Fowler, Founder of EmberFit

Strength training and climbing go hand in hand — especially for women who want to feel strong, confident, and capable both on and off the wall. In this guest post, Coeur Climbing community member and certified fitness trainer Julia Fowler shares how personalized fitness training can support climbing performance, prevent injury, and build long-term confidence.

About the Trainer

Hi, I’m Julia! I’ve been part of Coeur Climbing Company since the day it opened, and it’s been an absolute pleasure being involved with both the Coeur team and the local climbing community. Alongside climbing, I’m also a certified fitness trainer. I previously worked at a local gym before recently launching my own training business.

Fitness has always been a huge passion and constant part of my life, and I genuinely love helping others discover their strength, confidence, and potential through movement. Below is more information about the programs I offer and how fitness training pairs perfectly with climbing.

Curious what this kind of support feels like in real life? Your training is built around your body, your goals, and your climbing.

Fitness Training & Climbing — Better Together

When I first started climbing, I was a university student in Tennessee and climbed regularly at a local gym (shout-out to High Point Climbing!). One day, while struggling up a route with very little technique, an employee watched me climb and then exclaimed, “Dang! Your back is ripped—do you do gymnastics or something?” I laughed and replied, “No, I just work out!”

That moment stuck with me because fitness training—especially resistance training—and climbing truly go hand in hand. You can have great climbing technique but lack strength, or have plenty of strength but poor technique. When you combine both, that’s where real progress happens.

Early in my climbing journey, I wished I’d had someone to guide me with climbing-specific technique and fitness advice. I learned mostly through observation, talking with other climbers, watching YouTube, climbing a lot, and being extremely persistent. Over time, things began to click, and I experienced those “aha” moments. Looking back, I believe I could have progressed faster and with more confidence if certain techniques and a climbing-specific training routine had been introduced earlier.

With that being said, the journey taught me a lot. I met incredible people, learned through trial and error, and discovered how fitness directly supports climbing performance. Although climbing was challenging at first, I advanced quickly thanks to my determination, prior strength from resistance training, and consistent practice.

Fitness Tips to Improve Your Climbing

Here are a few fitness-related warm-up and strengthening exercises that can help elevate your climbing:

  • Perform pull-ups several times per week, or work through progressions to build up to one

  • Incorporate push-ups or push-up progressions

  • Strengthen your core to add stability and extra power

  • Train your legs with squats and lower-body work so you rely less on your arms and maintain endurance on the wall

  • Warm up joints before climbing—especially shoulders, wrists, hips, and ankles—to ensure they’re mobile and ready to move
