BUILDING CONFIDENCE: HOW CLIMBING CAMPS HELP KIDS

Confidence is essential for the development of children as it is closely linked to their self-esteem and how they perceive themselves. When children trust their thoughts, feelings, and values, rather than relying on external factors or the opinions of others, they become more resilient and better equipped to handle setbacks without giving up.

Adults can help children build confidence by guiding them through challenges, teaching them how to persist through difficulties, and showing them how to tolerate frustration. These skills will benefit children in many situations down the road, from solving complex problems to taking on new responsibilities.

climbing camps offer a unique and supportive environment for children to practice and develop confidence in a fun and engaging way.

Climbing involves both mental and physical challenges. Both help kids develop confidence! Plus, camps offer a social dimension with its own benefits.

mental

  • Climbing requires children to practice thinking through problems and creating their own solutions, which helps them develop independent thinking.

  • Climbing activates the brain's problem-solving abilities. It’s a great place for kids to explore trying different solutions, learning from failures, and persisting through difficulty.

physical

  • Like any sport, climbing is an activity where kids can expand their strength and capabilities and observe their skills improve. This sense of improvement is a confidence boost!

  • Any fear of heights or falling can be addressed in a secure environment with appropriate equipment, safety training, and supervision. Climbing camps enable children to experience the thrill of perceived risk while minimizing real danger, promoting careful evaluation and planning associated with healthy risk-taking.

social

Climbing camps also provide a social dimension, allowing children to make new friends, practice social skills, and learn teamwork.

The sense of accomplishment that comes from achieving goals, whether it's mastering a specific route or witnessing skill improvements, is immensely rewarding and boosts a child’s confidence for future goals. Counselors can help children recognize and celebrate these small victories while setting them on the path to accomplishing bigger goals. Many campers return for more climbing fun and some even join youth climbing teams to further enhance their skills.

While camp counselors offer friendly, knowledgeable support and guidance to children, encouragement from peers can also be incredibly motivating. The climbing community is known for its camaraderie and support, and this is instilled from an early age at camps.

our summer camps

Coeur Climbing Company in the Coeur d’Alene/Post Falls area offers a variety of camps for different age groups throughout the summer. Our weeklong camps consist of 2.5-hour sessions where campers can explore various types of climbing, including the basics of roped climbing, and bouldering basics in our dedicated kid-specific climbing area. We keep our groups small and cater to each child’s individual needs. Our camps also include team-building activities, games, and snacks to enhance the fun factor!

Climbing camps offer children the opportunity to build the confidence they need to tackle challenges in a supervised, social, and enjoyable setting. The confidence gained through climbing can positively impact other areas of a child's life, such as school, social interactions, and other sports.
