Coeur Climbing Gives Back: Free Climbing Event for Adaptive Climbing Kids

Back in July, we had the pleasure of hosting a special event in collaboration with the North Star Child Development Center. This nonprofit organization specializes in helping all children, regardless of ability, reach their full potential. In order to help facilitate this goal, they reached out to us in order to see these local kids literally achieve new heights on our walls! The event was coordinated through Courageous Kids Climbing, a group of rock climbers based in Central Idaho that donate their time to teach children with special needs how to climb.

The North Star Child Development Center

Using research-based educational programs spread throughout a variety of disciplines, North Star develops curriculum to assist children facing challenges with behavioral management, language development, social skills, and academics all within a positive environment. Whether it’s children struggling to engage or develop functional communication skills, North Star’s tailored approach is designed to help each child individually, empowering each to thrive in their own manner.

Reaching New Heights at Coeur

In conjunction with these goals, Coeur Climbing offered a safe environment for these children to conquer their fears and achieve new heights on the climbing wall! With a variety of adaptive climbing tools, auto-belay systems, and Dan’s muscular frame to help belay, these kids rose to the challenge and enjoyed what climbing offers to everyone: a community full of encouragement and smiles.

Climbing and its Impact

By sponsoring and hosting events like this, Coeur Climbing hopes that every child, regardless of ability or background, can enjoy the spiritual heights climbing has to offer. We’re incredibly grateful to the folks at the North Star Child Development Center, and hope to further embed these community partnerships so that climbing can be a part of everyone’s world.

Daniel Shaw

Daniel began climbing indoors in the 1990s but quickly took his passion outdoors. After earning degrees in Engineering and Earth Science Education, he worked as a climbing guide and coach while pursuing personal climbing goals. Moving to Coeur d’Alene in 2006, Daniel began planning his dream of a full-service climbing gym. Coeur Climbing Company is the result of over 20 years of dedication to bringing year-round climbing to his community.
